Our Assessment: This is a Winchester Model 88 lever action rifle with a 22” barrel chambered in .308 Win. The rifle is blued with a checkered stock with pistol grip and recoil pad. This model was made from 1955 to 1973, and was about the only lever action model chambered in a rifle cartridge without an external hammer that Winchester ever made, and had a removable magazine vs. the tubular magazine used on its other lever action rifles - a descendant of the Winchester Model 1895. This rifle is in about Fine - Excellent condition with a lot of its original finish remaining. The .308 Win. cartridge is a great cartridge for deer and antelope, but in its heavier loadings can also be used on elk. Anyone who hunts in the woods will appreciate its short 22” barrel and fast handling characteristics for fast shots on running game.

9 rows 1955 -- Model 88 was introduced by Winchester in 308 Caliber serial number 4 was the first. The Model 88 was available in other calibers (.243 Win,.284 Win,.358 Win), but the.308 was by far the most popular. Over a quarter of a million were made. Check your Winchester serial number here. This serial number is incorrect. The numbers for the 88 go from 1 to 285100. Look at the rifle carefully, perhaps with a magnifying glass. Winchester must have been thinking the same thing when it introduced the Model 88 in 1955. Instead of having a tubular magazine like most lever guns, which limited ammo selection to flat-nose bullets, the 88 got a four-round, detachable-box magazine that allowed the use of aerodynamically superior spitzers.

Winchester Model 88 Serial Number Dating
To the maximum extent possible, the dates of manufacture shown were obtained from the original Winchester Factory Polishing Room serialization records; otherwise estimates were made using multiple sources of information (e.g. George Madis, Ned Schwing, etc.), in which case the data was extrapolated to the best of our ability. This information is no substitute for obtaining a Winchester Factory Letter from the Cody Firearms Museum (available for certain models and serial ranges) which in addition to the Serial Number Application Date, normally provide the original Received In Warehouse Date and Date Shipped from Winchester factory. For purposes of determining if your gun is legally considered an “antique” (pre-1899 DOM), the BATF has told us they use the DOM dates published by the manufacture (Winchester). Those dates coincide with the Madis dates and can be viewed on Winchester’s site at:Winchesterguns.com
